Lesson 2

Power, charging, Wi-Fi & updates

Switch Move on and off, charge it, and use the Setup menu to check the battery, change the brightness, join Wi-Fi and update Move's software.

You’ll need:
  • Your Move and its USB-C cable
  • The power supply that came with Move, or a computer to charge from
  • Your Wi-Fi name and password (only for the Wi-Fi part)

The idea

Move runs on a battery, so you can make music on the sofa, on a train or in bed. A full charge lasts for up to about four hours of playing. You charge it through the USB-C port on the back, either with the power supply from the box or from a computer.

Most of Move’s housekeeping lives in one place: the Setup menu. It’s where you check the battery, dim the lights, join Wi-Fi and install new software. You open it with a Shift shortcut, and you move around it with the wheel:

  • Turn the wheel to move the highlight up and down the list.
  • Press the wheel to open the highlighted entry, or to switch it.
  • Press Back to go one level back out.

That same turn, press and Back pattern works in almost every menu and list on Move, so it’s worth getting comfortable with it now.

  1. To switch Move on, find the yellow Power button on its back edge and press it.

    Didn’t work?
If nothing happens, the battery may be empty. Plug in the USB-C cable (see the next steps) and try again after a few minutes.

You should see: The display wakes up and Move starts.

  2. The very first time you switch Move on, a short welcome setup appears. It offers to join Wi-Fi, turn on error reporting and install the newest software. You can follow it, or turn the wheel to Skip and press the wheel. Skipping is fine: this lesson covers the same things.

    No welcome setup?
It only appears on the first start. If your Move went straight to a screen of Sets, there’s nothing to skip. Move on to the next step.

You should see: The Set Overview, where your songs are kept.

  3. Plug the USB-C cable into the USB-C port on the back, and the other end into the power supply or a computer.

    Didn’t work?
If Move is switched off when you plug it in, you’ll see a battery symbol for a moment instead.

You should see: A short message on the display says Move is charging.

  4. Hold Shift, then press Step 2. Let go of both.

    Didn’t work?
Press them in that order: Shift first, and keep holding it while you press Step 2.

You should see: The Setup menu opens, and the icon under Step 2 flashes while it's open.

  5. Turn the wheel slowly to scroll through the list until you reach Battery. Entries with an arrow open a smaller menu. Entries with a dash switch something on or off.

    Want more detail?
Pressing the wheel on Battery shows what the battery is doing, for example Charging. Press Back afterwards to return to the list.

You should see: The highlight moves through the list, and the battery level appears next to the Battery entry.

  6. Turn the wheel on to Brightness, then press the wheel to open it.

You should see: The Brightness entry opens.

  7. Turn the wheel to try the different brightness levels, and stop on one you like.

    Didn’t work?
This setting changes the lights in the pads and buttons, not the display. At the very top level, Max, only the pads get brighter than at High.

You should see: The pads and buttons get brighter or dimmer as you turn.

  8. Press Back to return to the list.

    Did the whole menu close?
If Back took you all the way out of Setup, that’s fine. Reopen it the same way as before (Shift plus Step 2), then carry on.

You should see: You're back in the Setup list.

  9. Turn the wheel to Wi-Fi and press it to open. If you don’t want to use Wi-Fi now, press Back and skip ahead to the step that closes the Setup menu.

You should see: The Wi-Fi menu opens, showing Wi-Fi Off if Wi-Fi isn't on yet.

  10. With Wi-Fi Off highlighted, press the wheel to switch Wi-Fi on.

    Already says Wi-Fi On?
If Wi-Fi is already on and your network has a check mark, you’re connected. Don’t press the wheel here, or you’ll switch Wi-Fi off. Skip ahead to the step that leaves the Wi-Fi menu.

You should see: Wi-Fi Off changes to Wi-Fi On, and a list of nearby networks appears.

  11. Turn the wheel to your network and press it. If it asks for a password, type it in (see the tip).

    Typing the password
Move shows a row of letters. Turn the wheel to a letter and press it to type it; press again to type it twice. Hold Shift for capital letters. The small three-dot icon next to the space bar switches to capitals, then numbers and symbols. Use the backspace icon or Back to delete a letter. When you’re done, select the check mark in the bottom right corner and press the wheel.

You should see: Once you're connected, your network has a check mark next to its name.

  12. Press Back to leave the Wi-Fi menu.

You should see: You're back in the Setup list.

  13. Turn the wheel to Update and press it. If you see Install, select it, press the wheel and follow what the display tells you. Let the update finish before you carry on. If Move restarts after updating, skip the next step.

    No Install option?
Updating from Move needs Wi-Fi, so join a network first. If you’re connected, you’re probably up to date. Current Version shows which version you have. If your Move shows a Check Update entry, use it to look for a new version. A small asterisk next to Update in the Setup list means a new version is ready.

You should see: The Update menu, with Install and a version number if new software is ready.

  14. Hold Back to leave the Setup menu in one go.

    Didn’t work?
Pressing Back works too. From the main list one press is enough; if you’re deeper, inside a smaller menu, press it twice.

You should see: The Setup menu closes and you're back where you started.

  15. When you’ve finished, press the Power button on the back to start switching off.

    Didn’t work?
Changed your mind? Press Back and Move stays on.

You should see: Move doesn't switch off yet. It waits for you to confirm.

  16. Press the wheel to confirm.

You should see: Move saves your work and switches off.

Try it yourself

  • Switch Move on, open Setup and find the battery level without looking at this page.
  • Set the brightness to the lowest level, then the highest. Which one would you use at night?
  • Leave the Setup menu using a different way from the one you used above.

Good to know

  • Move saves your music by itself, including when you switch it off. If the battery runs out, it saves and shuts down safely, and warns you on the display when the battery gets low.
  • If Move ever freezes, hold the Power button for ten seconds. That forces it to switch off.
  • Once Wi-Fi is on, Move joins your network by itself every time it starts.
