Lesson 5
Start a new Set
Make a fresh Set, give its pad a colour you like, and copy or remove Sets without losing work by accident.
- A Move that is switched on
The idea
A Set is one song or idea on your Move. Every Set has four tracks, and each track plays its own sound. The Set Overview is the place where all your Sets live. Here the 32 pads turn into 32 storage slots: a pad lit in a colour holds a Set, and a dark pad is a free slot. So your Move can keep up to 32 Sets.
To start something new, you pick a free slot and step into it. Move then fills the four tracks for you with random sounds (called Track Presets). You always get one drum kit, one bass, and two other melodic sounds, but which ones is a surprise every time. That is a nice way to get unstuck: a new Set is a new box of toys.
There is no save button. Move keeps your work safe on its own: it saves as you go, again each time you open the Set Overview, and once more when you turn it off.
In this lesson you will make a Set, colour its pad, make a copy of it, and then delete that copy. The copy is a safe thing to practise deleting on.
Hold Shift, then press Step 1.
Didn’t work?
Keep Shift held down the whole time you press Step 1. If you let go of Shift first, Step 1 does its normal job instead. You should see: The Set Overview opens and the pads show your Sets.
Press a pad that is dark. Any unlit pad will do; the drawing just marks one example.
Didn’t work?
A lit pad already holds a Set. If you pressed one of those, simply press a dark pad instead. You should see: The pad you chose lights up white, which means an empty slot is selected.
Press any one of the track buttons on the left of the pads.
You should see: Move leaves the Set Overview and opens your brand-new Set in Note Mode.
Tap a few pads to hear what this track sounds like.
Didn’t work?
Press a different track button and tap the pads again. Each of the four tracks got its own random sound, so each one sounds different. You should hear: Each pad plays part of whatever sound this track was given.
Hold Shift and press Step 1 again.
You should see: You are back in the Set Overview. Your new Set's pad now has a colour, and it pulses because it is the Set you have selected.
Hold Shift, then press your new Set’s pad.
You should see: The display shows the options for this Set, including an entry called Color.
Press the wheel while Color is showing.
Didn’t work?
If a different entry is showing, turn the wheel until you reach Color, then press it.You should see: The Color entry is chosen and you can now pick a colour.
Turn the wheel slowly and stop on a colour you like.
You should see: The Set's pad changes colour as you turn.
Press Back.
You should see: You are back in the Set Overview, and the pad keeps its new colour.
Hold Copy, then press your Set’s pad.
Didn’t work?
Changed your mind? Press Copy once more to forget what you copied. You should see: Move now remembers this Set, ready to be placed somewhere else.
Let go of Copy. Then press a dark pad to put the copy there.
Didn’t work?
Aim for a dark pad. If you press a pad that already holds a Set, the display asks you to confirm, and a second press would replace that Set for good. Undo cannot bring it back. You should see: A second coloured pad appears. It holds a copy of your Set.
Hold Delete, then press the pad of the copy you just made.
You should see: The display asks you to confirm the delete.
Press that same pad once more to confirm.
Didn’t work?
Check that it is the copy’s pad before this second press. A deleted Set cannot be restored. You should see: The copy is gone, and its slot is free for a new Set.
Lesson complete! Try the challenge below, or keep going.
Next lesson →Try it yourself
- Make one more new Set and listen to all four tracks. Compare its sounds with your first Set: they will almost certainly be different.
- Give each of your Sets its own colour, so you can spot them at a glance.
- Tap a Set’s pad in the Set Overview, then press Play to hear what is in it. Press Play again to stop.
Good to know
- To leave the Set Overview and go back to what you were doing, press Back.
- You can keep up to 32 Sets. When all 32 pads are lit, delete a Set you no longer need to free a slot.
