Lesson 8
Choosing sounds
Browse Move's sounds, swap the sound on a track, and save a sound you've tweaked so you can use it again.
- A Move that is switched on
The idea
Every track on Move has one sound, called a Track Preset. A preset is a ready-made starting point. You can play it as it is, change it with the knobs, or swap it for a different one whenever you like. A new Set gets random presets, so every Set starts out a little different.
Each Track Preset is made of two kinds of parts:
- An instrument makes the sound. On Move it’s either a synthesizer (Drift or Wavetable), a drum kit (called a Drum Rack), or a sampler that plays a recording at different pitches (Melodic Sampler).
- Two effects then change the sound, for example reverb (a sense of space), delay (echoes) or a filter (brighter or darker tone).
When you press a track button, the display shows a small icon for each of these parts (sampler sounds get one extra icon, for the recording they play), and you can step through them with the wheel. The browser is the list of all the sounds you can load. It’s sorted into categories such as Drums, Pad or Strings, so you can quickly find the kind of sound you want.
Press one of the track buttons. This takes you to the sound of that track.
You should see: The display shows the track's preset: a row of small icons and the preset's name.
Turn the wheel until all the icons are highlighted together. That means the whole preset is selected, not just one part of it.
Didn’t work?
If only one icon is highlighted, you’ve selected a single part (such as an effect). Turn the wheel back and forth until they all light up.You should see: All the icons are highlighted, and the display shows the preset's name.
Press the wheel to open the browser.
You should see: The browser opens in the preset's category, and all the pads pulse.
Turn the wheel one click to move to the next preset in the list.
You should see: You move to the next preset in the list, and it loads straight away.
Play some pads to hear it. Keep turning the wheel and playing to try a few more. Each one loads as soon as you reach it.
Didn’t work?
A drum kit plays on the left 16 pads, one drum sound per pad. A melodic sound uses all 32 pads, and the notes get higher as you go to the right. You should hear: The new sound.
Press Back once to leave this category and see all the categories.
Didn’t work?
You can also scroll to the very top of the list and press the wheel on the Back entry there. Pressed Back twice and landed on the icons again? The browser has closed. Press the wheel to open it again. You should see: The main list of categories.
Turn the wheel to another category, such as Drums or Pad, and press the wheel to open it.
You should see: The presets in that category.
When you’ve found a sound you like, press the wheel to keep it and close the browser.
Didn’t work?
Changed your mind? Press Undo to go back to the previous sound. You should see: The browser closes and you're back to the track's icons, with your new sound loaded.
Turn a few of the knobs to change the sound. Touch a knob to see on the display what it changes.
You should hear: The sound changes as you turn.
To save your version, make sure all the icons are still highlighted, then press the wheel to open the browser. Don’t turn the wheel yet.
Didn’t work?
If you turn the wheel in the browser now, a different preset loads and your changes are gone. If that happens, press Undo. You should see: The browser opens again, with your tweaked preset still loaded.
Hold Shift, then press the wheel.
Didn’t work?
Holding Shift shows an Options entry in the browser. If pressing the wheel while holding Shift doesn’t open it, wait until Options shows, let go of Shift, and then press the wheel. You should see: The Options menu opens.
Turn the wheel to Save Preset and press the wheel to confirm.
You should see: Your preset is saved.

Next lesson →Try it yourself
- Open a few more categories and play some presets in each.
- Give every track a new sound: find one drum kit and three melodic sounds that you like together.
- Open the Templates category. Its presets are plain starting points for building a sound from scratch. Load one and see how far the knobs can take it.
- Find the preset you saved in the User Presets category.
Good to know
- Look for your saved sounds in the User Presets folder of the browser. Their names come from the instrument or effect you began with. To give one a better name, or to throw it away, use Move Manager on a computer.
- You can open the browser on a single effect too: highlight just that effect’s icon and press the wheel. Then you’re browsing settings for that effect only.
- Sounds change the moment you scroll to them because a setting called Autoload is on. You can switch it off in Workflow Settings: hold Shift, press Step 3, find the Autoload entry with the wheel, and press the wheel. After that, scrolling only picks a preset, and a press of the wheel is what swaps the sound in.
